A mother is grieving the loss of her son, a 34-year-old veteran named C. B., who was fatally shot by a Reno police officer during a response to a domestic violence incident. B. had completed five tours in Afghanistan, and his service left him with deep psychological scars.

Recently released bodycam footage partially captures the incident. Police were called to a disturbance on Colorado River Boulevard, where they encountered B. inside a residence, appearing agitated and with one hand concealed. Despite the officer's attempt to de-escalate, B. lunged forward, leading to a physical altercation and the officer discharging their weapon four times. B. was pronounced dead later at Renown Regional Medical Center.

B.'s military background was notable; he enlisted at 17, inspired to honor his late father. His mother recalls signing his Army enlistment papers. B. served as an Army Ranger and dog handler specializing in bomb detection, earning numerous commendations.

His mother, who relies on a cane for mobility, shared that B. was planning to visit her to help with Christmas decorations. She described the struggles he faced post-service, including nightmares and a reluctance to discuss his experiences in combat.

B.'s history included previous encounters with law enforcement, including a 2019 arrest for assaulting his mother during an argument and a guilty plea in a separate domestic battery case. Despite these incidents, charges in the assault case were dropped, and he completed community service and a domestic violence program for the battery charge.

Applications for protection orders against B. in 2019 and 2021 revealed a troubled and volatile nature. One was granted, citing physical abuse and threats, while another was denied due to a lack of recent incidents.

The Sparks Police Department is conducting an investigation into the shooting, following regional protocols for police-involved shootings. The tragic outcome of this case highlights the complex challenges veterans may face and the ripple effects of trauma and mental health issues stemming from combat experiences.

He’s a big dude. Menacing in every way. Sad state of affairs for this young man. Sorry for the officer who had to shoot him and really sorry for his mother. No parent should have to bury their child and especially at fucking Christmas time.. fuck all it’s a bad day for everyone involved.
