I remember getting a pirated video copy of The Purple One fairly early in his career when he played at Syracuse University. Up until then I had never seen anything but film clips of him. I was mesmerised by his performance, the band was so tight, crisp, and heaving as if one giant organism. His mastery of the fretboard was a revelation. It wasn't just a 'gig' he was playing ...... it was a "gathering", a congregation of funk zealots who were hearing the gospel coming straight from his guitar. It was impossible to tell where Prince and his guitar started and ended, forever entwined as if sharing the same DNA. Above is my piss weak example of my reviewer skills Doc !!  Now you know why Rolling Stone magazine have refused to ever pay for one of my pieces - because I'm just a walking bag of cliches. PS: I want to shit on toni basil and "Mickey" - but it always filled the dance floor at my local with horny teenage cheerleaders ........ and as a horny teenager loser trying desperately to get me some, I always thanked Toni Basil for writing that song ! |
