Have you ever read the accounts of that Doctor that researched how long a severed head's shelf life was during the French revolution? There were so many beheadings they had to invent the famous machine to do it, so it was no trouble for him to find willing test subjects. The Doctor worked out blink codes with them so their detached heads would be able to communicate for as long as possible. But the coolest thing I read was that once they started to fade away, and their eyes began to glaze a loud noise, or even a loud direct question could sometimes bring them back around enough for them to refocus their eyes on him--multiple times even. Slower and slower each time though. The Doctor even said that just by looking at the eyes he could tell wether they would respond, or if they had already died.
