Actually that is one of the most effective ways to protest historically, by hurting yourself. Hurting anybody else can make you look monstrous, and if nobody gets hurt, who is gonna care? Think of the most successful protests in history, like ghandi's peaceful protest and MLK's peaceful protest....the secret of peaceful protests is that they only work if the other side ends up hurting your side, its kinda fucked up, they basically ask for it so that you hurt them and fire into the crowd or something while they remain 'peaceful' so that on the world stage you can gain sympathy points for your cause and make the other side look monstrous. Besides that, hunger strikes are very common and have been pretty effective in some situations in history, and that just hurts you as well. Also consider the famous case of the monk who lit himself on fire in Saigon in 1963 and then ended up as a cover on a rock band album nearly 20 years later... that photo won awards and had world leaders commenting on it, I would say that is a pretty effective protest, when powerful people all over the world take notice of you and your issues. but yea, i would agree that it is stupid and risky and you would most likely end up on the internet looking like a crazy man as you slowly die on the street and people dump fresh cut grass all over you.. |
