A 69-year-old woman, Marlene F.L., succumbed to multiple injuries in hospital after being attacked by two pitbull dogs.

The attack occurred on Monday in the East Zone of the city. Marlene was walking along a dirt shortcut when she was set upon by the pair of pitbulls. Witnesses told police the assault lasted approximately 20 minutes, during which bystanders attempted to intervene by throwing stones but were unable to stop the dogs.

The owner of the dogs, identified as Evaldo R.d.S., was arrested at the scene. He has been charged with intentional homicide on the basis of eventual intent, under which the perpetrator assumes the risk of causing death through reckless conduct.

In addition to the two pitbulls involved, another 13 dogs, including puppies described by the owner's son as mixes of pitbull and mongrel, were seized from the property after inspectors identified unsanitary breeding conditions.

The exact trigger for the attack remained unclear, though officers suspected the female pitbull may have reacted aggressively due to the presence of nearby puppies.
