The opium harvest under Taliban rule had dwindled to 86 tonnes raw opium in 2002, and was on the verge of being wiped out completely The year after the allied invasion it was 4,500 tonnes and grew steadily over the period of occupation. Opium contains thebaine which is the raw ingredient needed to make oxycodone, hydrocodone, dihydrocodeine and many other opioid medicines. These can be synthesized in laboratories but the process is so costly that it has never been viable as a way of production. Now the opium to make these medicines is produced in Australia, India and other friendly countries. So no need for the Afghan opium harvest, fortunately because there won't be one in a few years under Taliban rule. I am not saying that was a reason we invaded Afghanistan, it's just coincidential. |
