The crash was caused by an engine failure at too slow of speeds and altitude. If the pilot had been at normal cruising altitude, even if he had been traveling as slow, he would have been able regain control and land safely. If he had been going faster, the loss of the thrust wouldn't have made his plain rotate as much, because his wings would have been providing adequate thrust to hold the plane level.

The only blessing in this situation is that most of the victims died pretty much instantaneously. But I'd hate to have been any of the relatives walking among the completely mangled remains of their loved-ones.
