When you're fully loaded ( I'm sure that truck was ) and going around 55-65 mph even with full air and cold brakes it's going to take a while to stop. You have to use the brakes on the trailer to stop or else you will jack knife. Gearing down and or using the Jake brake won't do shit either. That's why you have to anticipate your stopping distance well in advance of your stopping point. My opinion is the guy wasn't paying attention to his air gauge and when he wanted to slow down it was too late. He should've ran it off the road like gimlet said. |

Anticipate stopping distance? Air gauge?  The vehicle had no brakes, hence the title "Tractor Trailer Without Brakes Crashed into Cars". It was a runaway freight train! I couldn't help but notice the distance between the first casualty and the rising black smoke down the road, which seemed like more than a couple of miles. It didn't look like he tried to do anything to stop the truck much less run it off the road. In my opinion he was just another dumb ass trucker and/or just didn't give a shit and waited for the truck to slow on its own.
