7 Dead Bathers Fished Out of a Holy Pond After Waterfall Flashflood Hit Them
The death toll rose to 8 in a flash flood at the Kapila Theertham waterfall, on the outskirts of Tirupati, India on Sunday, Sept 27 as one more body was retrieved the next day. While the first four deceased were identified two more bodies were fished out late on Sunday night. All the bodies were handed over to their relatives. Initially it was reported on Sunday that two young men were washed away, and two others are feared to have met the same fate, during the flash flood due to a heavy downpour on the Tirumala hill. The men were part of a group of four automobile mechanics. They were reportedly bathing in the pond above the hillock from which the waterfall drops. It is a normal practice for local youths to climb the hillock and indulge in revelry in the two ponds above the fall. The weather had been sunny in the afternoon, but heavy rain in the upper heights of the Tirumala hill brought water cascading down at around 4.30 p.m. catching the revellers unawares. The torrent threw the victims’ bodies down with a thud into the holy tank, where devotees take a holy dip. |

Worshipping is risky business over there . Drownings, suffocating, stampeding, burning, collapsed bridges . Too many people in one place .
