Occasionally, I volunteer to assist in training law enforcement for these exact scenarios. I’ve been tased by the LASD and the LAPD in a controlled setting. THAT’S real physical exertion: every muscle fiber in your body gets a signal to contract as hard as possible all at once for as long as the taser is applied- up to 5 seconds at a time. That’s what killed this old man. For what it’s worth, he appears to have had an acute anxiety attack (I can’t breath) on account of the cop trying to physically force him to sign the ticket, force him to the ground, and apply pressure to his torso for control and compliance, as they’re trained to do. The sudden escalation in violence is terrifying and disorienting for the average person, and he probably legitimately thought he was dying. This was an agonizing moment of sheer terror and an impending sense of his own death, and it turns out that he was right. I’ve never seen or heard of a cop use violence to coerce someone to sign a ticket until now. This was all sorts of wrong. This officer was using his training correctly in a sense, but had a major error of judgement that cost this man his life. Tasers ARE deadly, especially with people who are stressed, old, or have health issues. He had all three.

If I'm convinced that I didn't cause the accident, I'm sure not signing anything that said I did. If the cop wants to take me to jail if I don't sign, he can haul me in. But what kind of absurd choice is that? Admit guilt or go to jail? The guy was never told if he could or how to contest it before a judge. This cop was probably a nobody growing up and a nobody at home. Now that he's hiding behind a badge, he uses it like a cudgel, showing citizens what a tough guy he is now.
