In the US at marked intersections we have stop lines for cars which are several feet in distance from the crosswalk. This, assuming all involved follow the laws, will prevent that type of accident. Also our school buses are all required to have a ‘fence’ type barrier that opens when the bus stops, causes people crossing in front of the bus to walk several (8-10?) feet past the end of the bus before being able to cross in front. That, of course, keeps pedestrians in full view of the bus driver. Commercial buses and other large trucks don’t have that. If you need to cross in front of any manned vehicle you still just need to have common sense. Making eye contact with the driver is an excellent way to be safe! If you can see their eyes then they can see you! Unless they have a vendetta against you then you should be reasonably safe to cross!!! |

My husband's extended family live in Monterrey. They always made it sound so cosmopolitan and nice. Now I know.
