This is Prime example for why no knock raids at night need to be outlawed.

The occupants were awakened from sleep, which at the time of many of these raids is when a person is in NREM stage 3/4 sleep, meaning they are deep asleep and are difficult to awaken. When a person is awakened in this stage, their brain takes 15-20 seconds to full awaken, so they are groggy and cannot process all of the sounds they hear while the fight-or-flight adrenaline surge is kicking in. So you have someone with a racing heart, intense fear, and a brain that isn't able to make good decisions because it's still in sleep mode, suddenly being faced with a home invasion.

The police announcements either come before someone awakens, or while they are still groggy and unable to process sound well. It is a recipe for shootouts and completely innocent law-abiding people have died in this same manner when police raided the wrong apt/house.

As food for thought, the general warrants the crown gave customs inspectors that so pissed off the USA founders could only be served in daytime and the inspector actually had to knock and announce the inspection. God only knows what they'd think of nighttime raids like this.
