3 Killed when Speeding SUV Hits Curb Hitting Pedestrians, Philadelphia

Three people died early Tuesday after the driver of an SUV lost control and crashed at Kensington and Allegheny Avenues in Kensington.

A SUV’s driver jumped a curb at a high speed and hit pedestrians outside of SEPTA’s Allegheny Station, striking at least three people, shortly before 2:45 a.m. Tuesday.

The driver was traveling east on Allegheny Avenue approaching Kensington Avenue and wasn’t able to turn on the bend in the road, barreling through the intersection, mounting the curb and striking a turnstile.

The driver of the SUV, along with the two pedestrians — a man and woman — were pronounced dead at the crash site. One man’s body in front of the SUV was charred and decapitated. Their identities were not immediately released

The driver — who also was not immediately identified — was driving at least 100 m.p.h. before the crash. A 53-year-old man was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was in stable but serious condition.

In a video of the scene, the SUV is seen smoking from the front, which is completely mangled and destroyed. Surveillance footage reviewed by The Inquirer shows the SUV at the moment of impact, crashing into the turnstile and the wall of the station, hitting one pedestrian so forcefully that the person is flung in the air and lands a few feet away on the sidewalk.

~ Nothing but the usual bummers mosing about at that time, so noone will be missed.
~ I am so surprized that the whole neighborhood didn't go up in flames & a puff of smoke, from all the usual trash in the streets, including the people.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Three people are dead after an out-of-control SUV crashed into pedestrians and then a SEPTA station in the Kensington section of Philadelphia.

A police officer who was on patrol in the area saw a white SUV traveling at a high rate of speed at Kensington and East Allegheny avenues around 2:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Police say the SUV jumped a curb and then struck three pedestrians who were on the sidewalk.

The SUV then hit the turnstile at SEPTA's Allegheny Station before crashing into the station itself and catching on fire.

"It sounded like a bomb went off and everyone started running away," witness Ariana Kmecak told Action News. "Once it settled down, people started walking closer towards it. Then they saw the car so they started running over."

Police say the male driver of the SUV was killed.

Two pedestrians, a male and female, were pronounced dead at the scene.

"There is a male body right in front of the vehicle. That body is clearly decapitated. The body is clearly mangled and appears to be somewhat burned," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.
