2 People Plunged from Viaduct During Crash That Killed 9

China, A car accident at Shenzhen’s Bao'an International Airport occurred Sunday afternoon, leaving 9 people dead and 23 others injured.

At 3:32 p.m., a red sedan rammed into some 20 to 30 pedestrians, who were watching airplane takeoffs and landings near Terminal 3.

The crash killed 5 on the spot, 2 plunged from the viaduct and left 27 others injured. Four died later in hospital.

The platform is part of a driveway, not designed for pedestrians.

A witness who narrowly escaped the accident told that he did not realize pedestrians are banned from the area because there were neither signs nor staff workers to caution them.

However, a spokesperson of the airport said their guards patrol the area and disperse people on daily basis. The airport will add warning signs and increase patrols in future, he said.

The driver, a 24-year-old woman surnamed Yang was accompanied by her boyfriend surnamed Wu.

According to Wu, Yang became highly nervous and lost control of her car when a car behind them continued to honk.

Yang has been held by the police for questioning. Further investigation of the case is underway.
