Maybe the killer was going to do something nefarious to the horses. And the boys didn’t want the horses taken by the killer.
Or maybe the killer happened to be in the area and just wanted to kill. Perfect opportunity.

Maybe killer attempted to take the younger boy and didn’t realize the older brother was there and he just decided to shoot them both.

Would be interesting to know if they were assaulted/beaten before being shot.
