I'm sure getting shot in the face could prob affect memory somehow, in some cases. I personally know people that don't remember half the day a car wreck happened.

There is no way in hell someone didn't get charged based on the state this happened in alone. He was a minor, but he used deadly force to prevent a property crime. Since the assailant wasn't armed and there is no physical injury to anyone but the bad guy, plus at 14 there's no legal way he was concealing that pistol, it's not looking good. But i can't find a single but if info, so they are keeping it real quiet. Likely because he's a minor...
