A-10 Gun Run for Pinned Down Troops (VERY INTENSE)

An a-10 is trying to located the enemy and tries to help guys out on the ground who (by the sound of it) are under heavy fire, it's such a good movie to show how confusing things can be from that height. The beeping you hear is the ground proximity warning (under 1000 ft).

An A-10 Thunderbolt II flies a close-air-support mission over Afghanistan on Oct. 7. The A-10 has excellent maneuverability at low air speeds and altitude, and are highly accurate weapons-delivery platforms. The first production A-10A was delivered to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., in October 1975. It was designed specially for the close-air-support mission and had the ability to combine large military loads, long loiter and wide combat radius, which proved to be vital assets to the United States and its allies during Operation Desert Storm and Operation Noble Anvil.

Re: A-10 Gun Run for Pinned Down Troops (VERY INTENSE)

Capt. Chris Petek describes the size of a 30mm round compared to the GAU-8/A "Avenger" 30mm cannon of the A-10 at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, Nov. 29 2008. The cannon can fire up to 4,200 PGU-13 30mm high-explosive incendiary rounds per minute and is the backbone of the fighter's armament. Captain Petek is an A-10 pilot deployed from the 75th Fighter Squadron at Moody Air Force Base, Ga. (U.S. Air Force photo/Staff Sgt. Samuel Morse)

Re: A-10 Gun Run for Pinned Down Troops (VERY INTENSE)

That gun is so ferocious that it actually has the ability to send the aircraft backwards were it not for the forward thrust of the engines. I've seen when they go high order too, looked like someone stuffed a bunch of black broomsticks in the nose of the aircraft. IMO they're the most amazing non-stealth aircraft ever made, they can remain airborne until... well I don't know how fast but I've seen REAL slow until one was on the ground.

Re: A-10 Gun Run for Pinned Down Troops (VERY INTENSE)

First time I saw an A-10 in action was back in the early 80's when I was stationed in Germany. To see one of those "light up" a hard target (old tank) was such a rush. We had a chance to check out the damage it cause the next day and all I can say is "I'm glad those are on our side".
