In 1995, a 12-year-old girl, publicly known as Laura, was riding her bicycle while vacationing in the Adirondacks (Warren County, NY). Patrick May, who was 31 at the time, cut her off with his vehicle, chased her into the woods, and assaulted her. May bound Laura's hands with duct tape, forced her into his car, and drove her to a second location. He subjected her to multiple sexual assaults, eventually choked her, and left her for dead in a rural area. Laura survived the night and was found wandering the next morning. Despite her trauma, she successfully memorized May's license plate number, which directly led to his arrest. Bite marks she left on May also served as critical physical evidence.

When she was found, Laura had retinal hemorrhaging due to the force of strangulation.
