Re: X-ray Burns

Ok guys now your talking about an area I actually know something about.
As a few of you know I actually repair radiation therapy machines used to treat cancer patients.
the machine I work on is called a high energy linear accelerator.
It is used to produce very high dose x-ray's and electron beams .
While under the proper conditions this radiation can kill cancer cells when used incorrectly it can burn tissue.
The examples here while not a good thing are no where near as bad as some I have seen over the years.
the radiation burns I have seen have most always been located on the chest or back of the patient.
while most times it will look like a bad sunburn in some cases I have seen very deep, very damaging burns in cases where a mistake had occured.
Having said that let me tell you all two thing .
First almost all cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy will see some minor skin redening while being treated unfortunetely it comes with the teratory.
Second even with the small risk of radiation burns for many cancers radiation therapy is the best and most effective form of cancer treatment.
The other thing to know about Cancer is that time is either your best friend or your worst enemy.
With early detection and treatment time is your friend.
Waiting to be checked and or late detection of Cancer and time becomes your enemy.
Take care of yourselfs people.
Ladies get those mamgrams and yearly lady related checks done.
Guys get that prostrate checked and get rid of those damned smokes they will kill you.

Would you say this was the result of an improper set-up on the equipment, or operator error, or both

My dad wouldn't let us stand near the microwave when they first came out because of radiation leaks. ?????
