Wound Myiasis: Maggot Man With Lower Leg Infestation
Wound myiasis is an infestation in which fly larvae develop in or near a wound. Some fly species infest only existing wounds, while others can invade living tissue. Open wounds, poor hygiene, advanced age and vascular disorders are among the main predisposing factors. The condition can cause tissue destruction, deep invasion and secondary infection. Treatment involves removing the larvae and rinsing the wound, with antibiotics or surgery used when needed. Wound myiasis should not be confused with medical maggot therapy, which uses sterile larvae under controlled conditions to clean wounds.

Re: Wound Myiasis: Maggot Man With Lower Leg Infestation
There was one episode of CSI what had a women who was found covered in maggots. Incidently, because maggots eat dead flesh she was saved from terrible infections and gangrene. I doubt this man was a doctor/scientist and actually knew about this, but i bet having those maggots probably saved his life in the long run. |
