AFAIK, this was a tradition in China to have Women have smaller feet because they need to walk smaller steps behind the husband or man. They're not allowed to walk past men back then.

It wasn't the shoes that did that to her feet. Foot binding was an old Chinese tradition. Around age 6, little girls would have their toes broken and then wrapped to be bound and shaped to have a smaller foot. The goal was to have a 3 inch foot, and was seen as beautiful. Of course a very painful procedure, and the pain never really stopped even years later. But if you didn't have your feet bound, it pretty much meant you wouldn't get married. They made the tradition illegal some time ago, but some women still did it in secret. I know it's kinda fucked, but that's culture for ya!
