Woman Loses Left Arm After Shark Attack in Mexico
A 39-year-old woman suffered severe injuries to her left arm and left thigh in a shark attack while vacationing in Mexico. She underwent initial surgery there before arriving in Canada six days after the attack for further treatment in Toronto. Her wounds required repeated surgical cleaning and skin grafting. An attempt to preserve her left arm with a tissue flap was complicated by congestion, and her hand remained without sensation. The arm was amputated at the mid-upper-arm level 33 days after the attack. She was discharged to rehabilitation on crutches on day 54. On day 393, surgeons reconstructed her thigh using tissue transferred from her abdomen. She later became a motivational speaker and writer and joined a shark-attack survivors' group. |
