FOR most people becoming blind would be a living nightmare - but for Jewel Shuping it was the fulfilment of a lifelong dream. Jewel, 30, from North Carolina, USA, has Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID), a condition in which able-bodied people believe they are meant to be disabled.

Her need to lose her sight was so strong that in 2006 she decided to blind herself - by having a sympathetic psychologist pour DRAIN CLEANER into her eyes.

As a young child she would spend hours staring at the sun in a bid to damage her eyes, acquiring her first white cane aged 18 and becoming fully fluent in braille by the age of 20.

Tired of being secretive due to the stigma surrounding the condition, Jewel is now sharing her story to help raise public awareness of BIID and to encourage people with the condition to seek professional help.
That's one of the weirdest disorders i will never understand.

I've seen cases of this where people would demand their limbs be removed.
One that I seen, guy gave himself frostbite on his leg. Lost the leg from the knee down. (He placed his leg in ice for about 20 hours.)

Now this lady's eyes? fucking gross..
I'd hack a limb off before I dump sodium hydroxide in my eyes..
Work with enough of the stuff and you'll know it's not something you want in your eyes..even if you don't want your eyes..

My Mum is completely blind, knowing her frustrations and struggles I really find it difficult to understand how anyone would want to purposely inflict this on themselves :

I'd never heard of Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID), It just saddens me that she had healthy eyes and would do this to herself, Ugh.
