Why You Should Not Get Pierced at the Mall.
I just hate those piercing guns with a passion, and I figured I'd share some info with you guys on it. They're shit! A piercing gun, traditionally used by mall stores for piercing ears, is typically inappropriate for piercing of any kind. Almost all medical professionals agree that piercing guns cannot be adequately sterilized (an alcohol wipe is NOT sterilization); this means that they are capable of passing hepatitis and other diseases. In addition, experience has taught the industry that: * Ear piercing studs are dull and tear through the body, causing unnecessary pain, healing duration, and other possible complications. * Ear piercing guns are inaccurate and not designed for piercing most body parts, resulting in improper piercing placement. * Ear piercing studs are the wrong size and too short for most piercings. The small gauge (generally 20g) and short length are not optimal for healing. Any "piercer" using a piercing gun should be avoided. Length - Ear piercing studs are simply not very long. They were designed for ear piercings, and most body piercings pass through more tissue. Thus, using a piercing stud compresses and damages the tissue, making it much harder to heal. Gauge - Piercing studs are typically 18ga or 16ga, which is too small to safely do most body piercing (and is commonly considered too small for lobe piercings as well). The things in blue print is from bme. Things that can happen when you use guns and studs from guns, is cross contamination, "cheese cutter ears" and cartilage collapse. When getting pierced by a GOOD piercer, you reduce the risks greatly. Another thing with ear piercing studs is that are often made of wrong materials. Depending on wether or not you have a nickel allergi, and how severe it is. The materials listed after nikkelcontent: Surgical steel: This has the highest content of nikkel. Should not be used in fresh piercings. If you buy jewellry from a small booth at a fair, you are risking getting a grade 500 or 400 steel. This is not acceptable in piercings! The only steel that is to be used is grade 316 stainless steel, or with a lower grade, such as 200 or 100, although the two latter is rarely used in jewellry. Colored steel is PVD plated, and the plating can chip of, therefore coloured steel is not recomended in pissy/fresh piercings. Silver: Silver also has quite a high nikkelcontent, and should not be used in fresh piercings. Sterling silver is the best option. Gold Gold is lower in nikkelcontent than steel or silver, but if you are intolerant, it's still not good for you. It can be used in fresh piercings, but it's not recomended. Titanium: This is by far the best option of those widely available in the general market. It has no nickel, and can be andonized, meaning by sending electrical currents through the steel, it changes colour. Coloured titanium is safe in fresh piercings. They can however not get the colours black and red, so if you want these, you'd have to go for plated steel, or niobium. Niobium: Niobium is getting more and more common, but it's still farely expensive. It has the same qualities as titanium, but it's lighter, and there good for surface piercings wich cannot be stressed too much. Niobium is only available in black. THe pics below shows what can happen if you're an idiot. I mean seriously, hairdressers do hair, not piercings. Would you go to a plumber if you had appendicitis? · · · · |

LOL Never really thought of simple ear piercings as something you had to go to a specialist for. I got all my piercings with those guns. My friend even bought herself one and gave some friends piercings. |

See, people being stupid like this is the reason I think about taking out my double helix. I have two very small titanium seamless rings side-by-side on my left upper helix. People say that it looks nice all the time. Until a girl at the place I worked at went to the mall one day and asked some idiot with a piercing gun to do the same for her. I'm told that, two years later, her ear looks like the top right picture. I got mine done 14ga with in a real studio and they healed beautifully, no scarring or keloids! But I know tell people not to copy it if they don't know what they're doing when they compliment mine. I almost feel bad for that stupid girl at that movie theater I worked at once. Almost. But she was kind of a jerk. So she deserved it. |

Well, how are they doing? Gunned ones tend to get pissy for no reason.. for everyday wear I recomend stretching them to a 14g, or 1,6 mm, and wear a bcr, a segment ring or a labret stud. |
