Weight-Training Equipment Unlocks and Falls on Man, Paralysis Almost Certain
App driver R.d.S.I., 42, was hit in the back by a weight machine that malfunctioned in a gym in Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará state, causing a severe spinal cord injury. CCTV images showed R. sitting on the bottom of the apparatus when the top part dropped and fell onto his shoulders. The machine in question was a 'hack squat', used to do conventional squats. According to witnesses, the machine weighed around 150kg. According to R.'s neurosurgeon, ligaments that communicated with the brain were severely damaged in the incident, and there is over a 99% chance that he will never walk again. However, R.'s sister confirmed that he could feel his arms after bone realignment and spinal cord decompression surgery. The gym said that the hack squat machine, purchased less than sixty days ago, had appeared to be in perfect working order at last inspection. |

I kept watching the guy in the center that was on his back doing leg pushes. He sat up & looked like his head was under that weight & I was waiting for that to crunch him. The other didn't look as bad but wasn't pleasant either for sure. |

Agreed. Also, it's possible he didn't lock it in place correctly since he was the last to use it.

thats not a hack squat, that is a SUPER squat machine. the one next to it is a vertical leg press, and the one next to that is a standard leg press, and the one next to that is a hack squat. but thats nitpicking. carry on.  |

could also be called a leverage squat machine. but those normally dont have backs on them. can be done both ways hence SUPER squat machine. sorry. |
