Wasting in Patients with Aids.
Wasting in a patient with AIDS. Unexplained constitutional symptoms as chronic fever, night sweats, diarrhea, fatigue, and weigth loss are usually findings of advanced HIV disease. Evaluation to identify specific pathogens that would explain the symptoms is essential before wasting syndrome is diagnosed. Autopsic studies found that most patients who died with a diagnosis of wasting syndrome, had misdiagnosed opportunistic infection such as atypical mycobacteriosis, extrapulmonary tuberculosis, microsporidial infection, CMV disease or lymphoma.
