Evaluation to identify specific pathogens that would explain the symptoms is essential before wasting syndrome is diagnosed. Autopsic studies found that most patients who died with a diagnosis of wasting syndrome, had misdiagnosed opportunistic infection such as atypical mycobacteriosis, extrapulmonary tuberculosis, microsporidial infection, CMV disease or lymphoma.
