I've heard this sort of self harm somehow focuses the hurt elsewhere, but then I've also heard that people who are that distressed don't even feel it when they cut.  |

 I had a cousin who used to do these superficial cuts over just about anything. I finally gave her the razor blade and held her arm for her--and told her either do it for real or don't ever do this shit again. She didn't do it anymore.
