Re: Unhappy Legs
[The fiancee, again] Mom was released today (Thursday). She has a CPAP machine and oxygen, though I'm not sure how that's going to work with her smoking habit. Everyone is busy pretending that her friends didn't gang up on me, and that she didn't threaten to call the police on me. As my mom says, she is "the queen" and "it's all about [her]." Until we're in a position to make our own money, that's just what it has to be. Anyway, her leg looks great. If I can convince her to let me take some pics I'll post them here. The Staph infection basically looks like a lowered place on her leg... almost like a dried up leg with the 'shore' around it several skin layers thick. The wound bed is an odd yellow color, almost like they covered it in iodine. Something that they gave her (possible steroids, maybe the vankomyacin - sp?) made her puff up like the Stay Puffed Marshmallow Man. Her eyes are so puffy that she is constantly squinting, and her skin is as red as a tomato with some weird white splotches. She also itches terribly. The most the hospital did was to give her hydrocortisone and benedryl. I have to say, that hospital was a bit of a joke. My mom never got to pick her own meals, despite there being a menu with at least two choices each day; nurses never came to check on her and if she called them, they'd say "I'll be right back" and.. never came back; they didn't really watch who came in and out and never checked to make sure that her BFF was really her sister (which, obviously, she isn't); and a bevy of other nonsense. I am very unhappy with their methodology, so if any of y'all are in Mobile... drop me a line and I'll tell you where NOT to go. |

Re: Unhappy Legs
Of course I missed you! I notice when people are gone if I like them All is well for the most part. My mother is getting on my last nerve, but, that is to be expected with no real friends since she lost her driving and drinking privileges in 2004 due to her stroke. I don't know if we discussed that, but, you find out who your real friends are when you are ill or down on your luck. Hopefully, the wedding won't be too bad and you can get back under that rock, lol! Have a safe trip! |

Re: Unhappy Legs
Was just reading this for the first time and I'm wondering if there's any news on your mother-in-law? How are the legs and her health in general? Hope you guys are well; you've got the patience (pun intended) of saints!

Re: Unhappy Legs
Hey there Irish! Actually, she's doing GREAT and that disgusting staph infection is nothing but a memory and a continent-shaped patch of pinked skin that stands out from the older skin nicely. Her health has improved drastically, which is good too. She still smokes and doesn't use her CPAP machine (ever) but she does sleep with the nasal cannula on, so her blood-oxygen levels are very good. They put her on tons of medication while she was in the ICU that she's actually STAYED ON, so she's like...pleasant to be around unless drunk or pouting. On the other side of things, my fiancee has been diagnosed with Narcolepsy and now has a CPAP machine of her own - and will likely be stealing Mom's mask, since she doesn't use it and it's far more comfortable than the one she has, ROFL. All-in-all, things are going great and I only wish I had some new and horribly interesting wound/disease/etc to share. I suppose if I wait long enough, something will come up. I do live in a city filled with rednecks, after all... |

Re: Unhappy Legs
Wow, I didn't expect someone to Necro' a thread of mine. This is extremely old news - but I'm glad you enjoyed the images. As for the advice you've given...doing THAT would have killed her. If we had not taken her to the ER for those awful legs (which did get worse, if you read further along the thread) she would have died. She was actually dying when she got TO the ER. It took a LOT of medication, doctor attention, machines to keep her breathing and almost 2 weeks in the ICU to heal her. As I knew it would - I may not be a medical professional currently, but I did spend a good part of my life being trained as a doctor (until my back and nervous system were injured). |

Re: Unhappy Legs
It was a very, very nasty Staph infection that came about as a complication of edema & cellulitis. Fun fact: She has very little scarring! |
