The Unfortunate Death Of Kickboxer Dennis Munson Jr. & How Officials Failed Him

BY Jessica Hudnall

Dennis Munson, Jr., was an amateur kickboxer, that made his debut fight, on March 28, 2014.

During the fight, Dennis showed several instances of being out on his feet, yet there was no move to stop the fight from the referee, the ringside physician, or Munson’s own corner.

Sadly, Munson collapsed after the fight, was rushed to the hospital and ultimately died due to brain trauma.

After news about Munson’s tragic passing broke, there was talk about the unhealthy environment at Roufusport, where Munson trained.

However, that has nothing to do with the sad fact that a young man was failed by the officials who supposedly have his safety as their first obligation. Referee, Al Wichgers, and ringside physician, Carlos Feliciano, didn’t do everything in their power to prevent this tragedy.

As in most cases, I firmly agree with Pat Barry, (fighter's sister), that someone should have stepped up and taken responsibility for what happened.

Boxing, in any form, is barbaric, in my humble opinion. A former wrestler, Chris "Harvard" Nowinski, (former Spirit Squad member), ( to that gimmick, but, thanks for Nic Nemeth, aka, Dolph Ziggler ), co-founded a hospital in Massachusetts, Sports Legacy Institute, (SLI), which deals strictly with sports head trauma, several year ago.

I've talked to my mom (a physician) in the past and wondered if boxing is what might've contributed Muhammed Ali's Parkinson's disease.

There's so much attention on football players and their brain injuries, but they pale in comparison to boxers.

Oh ffs It's clear to everyone that there's something wrong with his brain when he starts swaying like a drunk person all of a sudden. Being exhausted does not look like that and only after one round.. Come on. Assholes.

It could have, although my dad had Parkinson's and didn't box or fight.

I believe it was the institute I mentioned who examined Chris Benoit's brain and determined it was the equivalent of a man in his 70s.

Concussions don't help either.

There has to be something fishy going on because indeed, even someone with no experience in the sport could see there was something going on with this dude. This is deplorable, and I agree with the sentiment that the family needs to sue if they aren't already. However I wish there was a criminal investigation because seriously, this shit is criminal.

The poor guy and his family!
My sentiments exactly. The guy goes through hell in the ring, is finally rolled out, and doesn't see the inside of an ambulance until half an hour after that. No wonder he died.

My heart broke for his sister.

This is a risk that anyone takes when entering into a 'sport' where you are constantly kicked in the head and are kicking others in their heads.

I don't blame the doctors since there are thousands of fights where participants are disoriented and they just keep going.

People say it was 'obvious' because they are Monday Morning Quarterbacks.

I'm just surprised that so few people are killed doing while boxing, cage fighting and kick boxing.

When 10 boxers was asked the same question - "Do you think that boxing is a dangerous sport?" - then only one said "Yes". The other 9 didn't understand the question.
