Tumors, Abscesses and Skin Problems in Pet Hamsters
Tumors, abscesses and dermatitis are among the conditions that affect pet hamsters. Cancer is not common in hamsters, and most growths are benign. Tumors can develop in the skin, hair follicles, fat, eyes and internal organs. Older hamsters can develop lymphoma, including a form that causes hair loss and skin inflammation. Abscesses are pockets of pus under the skin, usually caused by bites, fights or cuts from sharp cage items. They often occur around the head and are treated by draining and cleaning the affected area and giving antibiotics. Other skin problems can result from infections or parasites, including ringworm and mites. |
