Re: Trichotillomania - Compulsive Urge to Pull Out Your Own Hair
I am 48 years old and have had this disorder since I was 15. No medication, no therapy, etc. has ever worked. I will go for periods of up to 3 years without pulling (I pull scalp hair); then something will set it off and I can undo that 3 years of success in less than an hour. It is a very depressing disorder to have. I've heard people say, "Just stop!" Really? Why that never occurred to me! Why don't I just do that! (rolling eyes). I don't eat the hair but I will often bite on the follicle end of the hair. Believe me, it's as crazy to me as it is to those who don't have it. I don't understand it, and I hate it. It has ruined many aspects of my life for me. It's why I didn't go to college ... because one of my worst triggers to pull is reading/studying. Stephen King should be very honored because I have willingly restarted the pulling due to a desire to read one of his new releases. Everybody has something to deal with I suppose. |

Re: Trichotillomania - Compulsive Urge to Pull Out Your Own Hair
I tend to play with my hair whenever I get bored, but in my case, I think it really cannot be compared to this. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences in this topic and like justlookingaO mentioned, everybody has some issues to deal with.

Re: Trichotillomania - Compulsive Urge to Pull Out Your Own Hair
I have this. I pull out my eyelashes. Also this summer I had like a mini meltdown and now I look like skrillex. Thankfully I can hide it a little bit by just wearing my hair down. Seriously though I haven't really pulled since High School and now everything's all vdvdvdvggfsdsd |

Re: Trichotillomania - Compulsive Urge to Pull Out Your Own Hair
I have had this since i was about 14. i pull out my eyelashes and eyebrows. a few times i have actually picked at my pubes..i know better now and keep my body completely hairless. no amount of medications or therapy has ever helped...my therapist says that there are specific triggers, but I have never been able to identify them. |
