Trench Foot Symptoms: Immersion Foot and Gangrene
Trench foot, also called immersion foot, is tissue damage caused by prolonged exposure to wet and cold conditions. Wet feet lose heat faster than dry feet. The body narrows blood vessels to reduce that heat loss, and tissue in the feet can die. It can occur at temperatures as high as 60 degrees Fahrenheit when the feet remain wet; the tissue does not have to freeze. Symptoms include red skin, numbness, leg cramps, swelling, tingling pain and blisters. Severe cases can develop gangrene, with the foot turning purple, blue or gray. Frostbite differs from trench foot because it involves tissue that has frozen. |
