Tourist Found with Maggot Infested Foot
Sihanoukville, Cambodia, 25th June 2016 - A tourist/foreigner was found sleeping rough with a maggot infested wound to his foot. He was taken for medical attention at the local hospital. Nationality not given by source.   ·  ·  ·  · |

Well maggots are actually used in medicine in some cases of necrosis, these are of course sterile maggots. Very little about that wound look sterile to me, more like he stepped on an apple corer or similar circular object. |

You are absolutely correct, in fact this was first realized at the battle of Chattanooga (where I spent my summers with my grandparents on the battlefield where they live). It was during the U.S. Civil War that this was first found, during the long drawn out battles of Chattanooga and Chickamauga (the supply hub of the Confederate States) there was a shortage of medical supplies and so therefore many soldiers were left without proper anesthetics for their wounds. It was discovered that soldiers whose wounds couldn't be treated with proper care for disinfection and had maggots grow on the wound actually turned out alright. The reason is actually very simple, maggots eat dead things, such as dead skin, and leave the live skin alone, and so it actually cleans and eats the dead skin away leaving new skin to grow and cover the wound and keep infection down. This was thought to have been a long known medical bit of useful knowledge but was forgotten when the great age of good and cheap anesthetics came about and so many people believe this was merely a 'rediscovery' but nonetheless it's very interesting. And I don't see it as disgusting as much as neat or cool that it happens to be useful in certain circumstances, including dating a dead body. But that's another topic lol  |

Yes, because hospitals all over the planet are chock full of homeless motherfuckers who have just had the rotten luck of stepping on one of the millions of apple corers that are strewn about all over the place...

SOME species of fly maggots eat DEAD flesh and clean wounds. Other species of fly maggots eat LIVE flesh and create/worsen wounds. You hope that it's the former that you end up with - not the latter.  |
