Tortoise Bitten By Rats During Hibernation
A six-year-old male spur-thighed tortoise was presented in mid-February with rat bite injuries to its limbs, tail and shell. Such injuries are common in hibernated tortoises when no precautions are taken to keep them safe from predation. The extent of injuries to the tortoise's front right leg and carapace on Day 1 Close up of injuries to the right foreleg on Day 1 View of tail injury and wound to right thigh on Day 2 Close up of right foreleg injuries in anaesthetised tortoise The right forelimb with temporary dressing in place The oesophageal feeding tube in place on Day 2, secured over the carapace Hydrocolloid dressing in place on the tail wound on Day 2. The thigh wound has been packed with silver sulfadiazine cream Close up of the tail dressing and thigh wound on Day 2 Close up of the foreleg before surgery on Day 5 Induction of anaesthesia before amputation Closure of the skin following amputation of the distal limb on Day 5 The tortoise immediately postoperatively. The surgical wound has been coated with a protective dressing of powdered aluminium A healthy bed of granulation tissue over the tail wound on Day 15 The tail dressing and healing thigh wound on Day 15 Application of a plastic spoon to the anterior plastron to provide support in the midline. The spoon handle was removed and the bowl glued to the plastron with methylmethacrylate The healed tail wound on Day 88 The tortoise made a complete recovery |
