Thanatophoric Dysplasia

The name means "death-bringing deformity". But all I can think when I look at him is him saying, "Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat......?"

Re: Thanatophoric Dysplasia

Do they die right away, or do they live with the deformity?

Re: Thanatophoric Dysplasia

Newborns with thanatophoric dysplasia are stillborn or die shortly after birth. Death in the neonatal period is due to severe respiratory insufficiency from reduced thoracic capacity and hypoplastic lungs or respiratory failure due to brainstem compression. Very rare reports of survival into early childhood have been cited

Yup... it's a genetic condition. Any two parents who happen to be carrying a copy of the defective gene, even if they are normal, can have a baby with this condition. Babies who have survived for any length of time have survived only on full life support.
