Thalidomide Defects

Thalidomide is a sedative-hypnotic and multiple myeloma medication. It was sold in a number of countries across the world from 1957 until 1961 when it was withdrawn from the market after being found to be a cause of birth defects in what has been called "one of the biggest medical tragedies of modern times". It is not known exactly how many worldwide victims of the drug there have been, although estimates range from 10,000 to 20,000. Since then thalidomide has been found to be a valuable treatment for a number of medical conditions and it is being prescribed again in a number of countries, although its use remains controversial. The thalidomide tragedy led to much stricter testing being required for drugs and pesticides before they can be licensed.

Recently countries around the world have started to use this drug again to treat diseases, AIDS in Africa in particular.

Re: Thalidomide Defects

Thalidomide did so much damage because it was actually prescribed to pregnant women as a treatment for morning sickness! Turned out that the time when women are most likely to experience morning sickness (the first trimester) is the time when Thalidomide is most likely to damage limb development... oops.

Re: Thalidomide Defects

If one is not to become pregnant, and it does treat diseases or their symptoms, is it still banned?

Re: Thalidomide Defects

Before thalidomide was released on the market as a morning sickness pill, it was first tested on mice. No severe side effects were discovered.

Then after the drug was linked to birth defects, it was finally tested on pregnant mice. The mice gave birth to offspring with the same defects!!!!

WTF were they thinking by not testing it on pregnant mice in the first place?! Unbelievable.
