Tapeworm Takes Over Sushi Lover’s Body  SUSHI is a staple meal for thousands of Australians everyday, but for one man, it nearly ended his life after worms took over his body. An x-ray revealed the Chinese man’s insides were crawling with tapeworm parasites, because the raw fish he ate had been contaminated. The man from Guangdong province had earlier gone to a hospital complaining of stomach pains, before the horror find.  Large tapeworms can be seen throughout the man’s body. Wikipedia describes tapeworm as “the infection of the digestive tract by adult parasitic flatworms called cestodes or tapeworms. “Live tapeworm larvae (coenuri) are sometimes ingested by consuming undercooked food. Once inside the digestive tract, a larva can grow into a very large adult tapeworm.”  This type of infection is life-threatening once it reaches the brain. Luckily doctors at the Guangzhou No. 8 People’s Hospital were able to save the man. Perhaps he will be steering clear of the sashimi plate next time he goes out for a feed.  |

Holy Shit! I can't possibly believe that the only noticeable symptoms this guy felt was stomach pain. I also have a question if any of my fellow DR'ers care to answer. I always thought that tape worms were these long flat worms which are literally shaped like a piece of tape. However, the worms in these x-rays don't look like tape worms to me. Does anyone know why are they so small looking?  |

I agree. However, I did see this reported on a few different websites. Every tapeworm I've seen a REALLY LONG (sometimes feet long) and mostly FLAT. The tapeworms are usually located in stomach and intestines. If it is really bad they can completely block both. Over 10lbs have been removed from one person. I have never heard of small ones located all over like the X-rays show. I'm thinking it is either a different infestation or a different type of tapeworm. |
