Taking a Skin Flap for Transplantation
Skin flap surgery is a procedure that involves removing a piece of healthy skin and tissue from one part of the body and moving it to cover a wound in another part of the body. The skin flap is usually partially attached to the body at one end, remaining connected to a blood vessel. The flap is then repositioned and stitched over the damaged area. Skin flap surgery is often used to repair defects left behind after: Traumatic injury, Mastectomy (breast removal surgery), and Skin cancer removal. Skin flap surgery has a lower risk of failure than a skin graft because the blood supply to the repaired area is maintained. |
