Syphilis: Tertiary and Congenital Forms (Picture of Syphilis)
Syphilis is an infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It spreads through sexual contact and can pass from a mother to her fetus, causing congenital syphilis. The infection progresses through primary, secondary and latent stages and can develop into late disease if untreated. Late syphilis can cause gummas, destructive inflammatory lesions with dead tissue at their centers that can affect the skin or bone. Late signs can appear 20 to 40 years after infection in up to one-third of untreated cases. Late congenital syphilis can cause characteristic abnormalities of the teeth, a saddle-shaped nose, bowed shins, inflammation of the cornea and deafness. Injected penicillin is used to treat all stages, with longer courses for late disease. There is no vaccine, and reinfection is possible. |

Re: Syphilis: Tertiary and Congenital Forms (Picture of Syphilis)
Treponema pallidum, is the spriochete responsible for these horrible images. Basically this burrowing spiral bacteria (see SEM image below) invades all soft tissue and bone in the body. It is spread two ways...sexual and congenital (infected mother to fetus). In the Tertiary phase (3-15 years post infection), Gummas form and start to disfigure skin and bone. Once Gumma are present the results are usually permenant (see original post and the skull below) In the Late Stage of this disease these spiral bacteria worm through the brain effectively destroying connections between neurons (Neurosyphilis). This basically turns the white and grey matter into Swiss cheese. In the CT below you can notice the diffuse loss of brain matter. In addition to small abscesses, large ones can also form can form. Notorious crime boss Al Capone succumbed to Neurosyphllis in jail in 1947. However, syphilis has been around since the dawn of man; first known cases were uncovered in Pompeii in two twins with congenital syphilis. If you want a more comprehensive review. Check Medscape and Wikipedia - Wiki also has a long list of notable people who were suspected to have it or contracted and died from it. It's funny most are artists or members of the elite class...too much time on their hands... those promiscuous fuckers. LOL!!! |

Wow, thanks for the knowledge. What the hell, that skull is just about the creepiest thing I have ever seen. This is the first time I have actually heard what Syphilis does. I am soooo caught off guard but also kinda intrigued, the brain picture is really awesome too. |
