Treponema pallidum, is the spriochete responsible for these horrible images. Basically this burrowing spiral bacteria (see SEM image below) invades all soft tissue and bone in the body. It is spread two ways...sexual and congenital (infected mother to fetus).

Wow, thanks for the knowledge. What the hell, that skull is just about the creepiest thing I have ever seen. This is the first time I have actually heard what Syphilis does. I am soooo caught off guard but also kinda intrigued, the brain picture is really awesome too.
