Steering Wheel Mayhem
The 23-year-old patient showed up at the emergency department in this condition. He was sitting in the driver's seat without his seat belt on and crushed his face on the steering wheel during a car accident. After the initial examination, it was observed that the patient's bilateral orbits (~ both eye sockets), the maxillary (~ area around the nose and part of the upper jaw), zygomatic (~cheekbone area) and nasal bone structures were no longer present on his face. Incredibly, he was conscious and breathing spontaneously. After stabilization, reconstructive surgery was planned by a multidisciplinary team. The right eyeball was avulsed (~not found) and the left eyeball was displaced anteroposteriorly. The last image shows the final aspect of the reconstruction.  ·  ·  ·  · |
