Spilled Boiling Water in Shoe

Hey everyone. I've been a member here for a while but never really have anything worthwhile to contribute.

Two and a half weeks ago I was boiling some water on the stove and while moving the pot, my thumb slipped and about a cup of boiling water slipped over the side and inside my shoe. Making matters worse, I wasn't able to kick my shoe off and had to untie my laces first, giving the water time to really scald my ankle.

The first picture is the following morning (the black is some silver sulfadiazine I happened to have on hand. As soon as it happened, I pulled my sock off but the big piece of skin had fallen off IMMEDIATELY.

Not particularly bad, but I thought I would post here. You can see in the shape of the burned area where the water pooled in my shoe.

I debrided the dead skin and tissue myself every 3 or 4 days (really hurt when doing this sober), then cleaned with Betadyne and applied antibiotic ointment and silver sulfadiazine alternately when rebandaging. I hope these post in order, but the most recent picture is from today.

Re: Spilled Boiling Water in Shoe

Guy I worked with in a kitchen dumped an entire 40 quart pot of boiling water on his calf/foot. ended up in the hospital for a week.

Years before that when I was new to restaurant work, emptied a fryer onto my foot. (Was still hot.)
Luckily I was able to get my shoe off in time before it soaked through.

Consider yourself "lucky", that could have been much worse.
Still pretty gnarly though.
Was used to being burned repeatedly in the kitchen, but I'd imagine that part of the body hurts like hell.

Not so worried about the scar, just glad it didn't get infected! Had spent the prior week reading up on necrotizing fasciitis and other related bacterial infections

Re: Spilled Boiling Water in Shoe

[QUOTE=mintycbo;5622228]Guy I worked with in a kitchen dumped an entire 40 quart pot of boiling water on his calf/foot. ended up in the hospital for a week.

That sounds horrible. I ran into a guy at the hospital (my mom went into septic shock in the middle of my very minor ordeal, but she's home safe and sound now) who broke into a steam pipe buried underground that burned through his leather boot while he was in the military, almost lost his foot. Skin is pretty important, as it turns out. Thanks for the reply!
