My ex has numerous cuts like that. One resembling hashmarks counting to ten I think. She had some serious issues in her formative years, not all of it her fault, but still.

I have a relative who self mutilates. She was a troubled teen, and she said the only two things she could control were her weight (anorexic) and self mutilation. She also mentioned that if she did it just right, the rush from the endorphins and mild shock removed whatever pain she initially felt, and she felt she had control of her life, even for a brief moment. Happily, she has managed to climb out of that low point in her life and is married and has two children.
She does have some pretty prominent scars that she has had to explain to her kids though.

I used to work with adults struggling with mental health issues and one of my clients was a woman whose young daughter was puzzled by the very distinct scar tissue on her mother's arms. My client had explained her that she had gone thru an illness which left her with nasty scars but was worried about how to tell her daughter the truth and when. Her daughter was around five years old at that time so very likely would not have understood the concept of harming oneself on purpose.
