They have to use large material to try to close some wounds, especially huge ones like this. The smaller diameter suturing materials will just rip right through the delicate friable (easily torn) skin. And yes, Dr's DO use a special stapler for some skin closures, on wounds expected to dehisce (open up) where sutures won't hold. YUMMY
