Good morning class. I'm here to give you a quick lesson on Small Pox. (yes, I'm a dork. This has been established many times.) Or at least a factoid that I found interesting. Ever wonder where the term "A milkmaid's complexion" originated? Most people assume that it's just a comparison to the cream they produce. However, such is not the case. Dairy maids would catch "Cow Pox" from dealing with the animals. Unlike the small pox, cow pox caused very little scarring and rendered most of those who contracted it immune to small pox. So the milkmaid's complexion had nothing to do with creamy skin, but rather they hadn't been all scarred up my small pox. Class dismissed. |
