Re: Skin Pick Disorder (Dermatillomanie)

i started when i was a little girl, around five i think. i could never let anything heal, i picked off scabs over and over again, my knees were scarred for a very long time. and i had terrible sunburns that i peeled and picked over and over. my poor burned nose was one big scab every summer. i picked the skin off of my fingers. i picked the bottom of my feet until they would bleed and it would be painful to walk. i did this until i learned to cut. and i've relied on this in between cutting times. i'm not doing it now, but every once in a while i'll catch myself starting to do it absent mindedly on my cuticles and i have to distract distract distract.

Re: Skin Pick Disorder (Dermatillomanie)

I have a type of this, where I hack at myself with scissors, tweezers and pins. I also bite my fingernails down until they bleed and sometimes I cut off my toenails and I can't walk properly. Did you see that freaky scene in the film "Black Swan" where she rips the cuticle and the skin back from her finger? I've done that several times.

I like to cut off any hard skin on my feet but often I cut too deep and bleed everywhere. My Podiatrist hates me. I always make an effort to pluck all the hairs from my toes and will dig down into the skin to find any stray ones. Today I dug out a "hang nail" from one of my big toes with a needle and a pair of scissors and it bled for ages but it's rather satisfying.

I'm not brave enough to cut as I can't take the pain but I'm happy to gouge things out of my skin.

Re: Skin Pick Disorder (Dermatillomanie)

I sort of wonder if I may have a mild form of this. If I get a sore somewhere I cannot help but pick at it and when a scab forms I have to pick it off all the time. I also pick at my navel from time to time and form a bunch of scabs which are also removed, and still have the urge to pick at my scalp..As well as ripping off hangnails and callouses.

Re: Skin Pick Disorder (Dermatillomanie)

Meth users sometimes do that because, apparently, they feel like bugs are trying to get out of their bodies. I had a brother who did that and got paranoid along with it.

Re: Skin Pick Disorder (Dermatillomanie)

Yea I'm pretty sure I have this. It's so compulsive, I don't realize I'm doing it. I just get bored or stressed out and tear little holes in my skin. Of course I have sensitive skin that's always breaking out for every little reason, and eczema, so I always have lots to poke at. One thing I have found that helps is lotion. Find a lotion that doesn't break me out, and carry it with me. Whenever my hand starts to wander, I slather lotion on. It keeps my hands busy, and also makes it hard to get a grip on my skin, since lotion is greasy usually lol. I'll try to have some pictures up later tonight of my scars and a few freshies. I have a wee one open on my forehead right now because I got a pimple I just couldn't let be, sigh. I'm sure I'll keep opening it up for months. I also have a rash on my thighs/upper legs, but that's more because of sensitive skin. I pick at it a little bit, but I'm trying so hard to leave it alone. It's agonizing.

As for cutting... it's not painful to me. It's a sexual thing that I prefer someone else to do to me. I don't really consider myself a cutter, but I have been known to indulge. Everyone does something bad, right?
