The entire bone structure below his orbital floors was destroyed. The blast obliterated the mandible (lower jaw bone), maxilla (bone forming upper jaw), palate (the roof of the mouth) and both zygomas (zygomatic bones, aka bones that form the cheeks). Soft tissue of the face as well as the airways were also severely damaged.
Two thirds of the patient’s tongue were lost to the blast, but the remainder helped the surgeons to locate the trachea and apply the tracheal intubation to let the air in and out of the lungs. Patient also had to undergo several plastic surgeries.
