"Sepsis: The Common Cause of Death You've Never Heard Of"~Thermo Fisher

September is Sepsis Awareness Month
Every 3rd heart beat, someone dies as a result of sepsis

37,000 people in the UK have died in the past 12 months as a result of sepsis.

275,000 people in the US have died in the past 12 months as a result of sepsis.

19 Million people become septic every year and sepsis has a staggering mortality rate of approximately 35%. Severe sepsis and septic shock are only hours away from the onset of sepsis; the mortality rate, once in septic shock, increases to roughly 50%.

No one is immune to sepsis. Sepsis is not an infection. Sepsis is your own body 'over responding' to an infection, any infection. The only thing you can do to help prevent sepsis is understand it's earliest symptoms and treat all infections early. Healthy, weak, rich, poor, all nationalities, all races. Sepsis is an equal opportunity killer.

Sepsis kills approximately 10 Million people yearly.

World Sepsis Day is on September 12th. Anyone who was around last year at this time may have known me as WinglessAngel. I Survived septic shock in January of 2012. I've come a long way since this time last year; involved with the sepsis community, my Tweets, along with 19 other organizations including the World Health Organization and The New England Journal Of Medicine are redirected for instant viewing on the homepage of World Sepsis Day. http://www.world-sepsis-day.org/

I'm so sorry, it's such a prevalent occurrence and it's so shocking due to how quickly things progress, mostly because a person is only hearing about it for the first time in the moment of distress. My condolences.

Precisely. The immune system, with the best of intentions, goes haywire and sends out every white blood cell to combat what may be a cut finger or extracted tooth or heart surgery. It's fast and, yes, in it's own defense your body begins to kill itself as vital organs begin to fail oxygen is rerouted from exterior limbs to save them. Many survivors end up with amputations of all limbs, on dialysis or with cognitive failure due to lack of oxygen to the brain. Its tragic and extremely under spoken of ..but that's changing :)

My Dad had sepsis. Very lucky to still have him today.
He got a shoulder infection from an op. Then had 2 silent heart attacks. Fought off the sepsis then had a heart bypass surgery because they found out he had heart disease.

You are very lucky he survived. Detecting the subtle symptoms of sepsis are difficult, add an already existing condition (post op) that may already put a patient in a category of "of course you're not feeling 100%, you just had surgery". It's the silence of sepsis and it's chameleon abilities that screw with everyone. I, too, had a coronary event my first night in ICU, I was not yet on pain meds or induced into a coma as they were still trying to figure out what was wrong, causing all my symptoms. I'll never forget it. Glad your dad made it through! Curious ...how has he been since? I understand he's had heart trouble, overall is his quality of life as good, or worse or better than pre sepsis?
