My daughter got this on her scalp, probably picked it up at school. It didn't look as bad as this though, but it will spread if you scratch it and it was a nightmare keeping her from scratching because it itches like hell. You don't need to get a prescription for it unless it's extremely bad. You can use athlete's foot cream on it, it'll usually kill it. On my daughter we used it along with Selsun blue shampoo (works for ringworm of the scalp too and relieves itching) and it was gone in a few days.

I heard the same fungi can be responsible for athlete's foot, ring worm and jock itch (another infection that can be treated with fungicide). Best thing is to avoid sharing your shower towel some other people.

lol, I had this. The joys of animal rescue! It actually wasn't so bad at all. It did itch and spread, but with cream, it cleared up in about a week.
