Rett Syndrome in a Girl
Rett syndrome is a brain disorder that causes severe difficulties with language, communication, learning and coordination. It occurs almost exclusively in girls and affects about 1 in 9,000 to 10,000 females. After 6 to 18 months of apparently normal development, affected children lose purposeful use of their hands and develop repetitive hand-wringing movements.

Mutations in the MECP2 gene underlie almost all cases, and most are new mutations rather than changes inherited from a parent. Other features can include a small head size, breathing abnormalities, seizures, curvature of the spine and drooling.
